Skadar Lake

The largest lake in the Balkans, with a surface area of 370 square kilometres, is located on the border between Montenegro and Albania.
Skadar Lake

The Montenegrin part, the Skadar Lake National Park, contains three special nature reserves: Manastirska tapija, Pančeva oka, and Crni žar.

The area around Skadar Lake has a diverse and rich cultural and historical heritage, including archaeological sites, fortifications, medieval monasteries, churches, and traditional rural architecture, indicating that it has been an important centre over time. Folk architecture - old rural units, individual examples of fishing and housing, stone bridges and mills on river streams - confirms the cultural landscape's architectural value. Skadar Lake is filled with aquatic and wetland ecosystems. Thanks to the preserved ecosystem, Skadar Lake is a "bird's paradise" for 280 species of birds. The symbol of Skadar Lake, the curly pelican, which the locals call "panac", is a phenomenon in this part of Europe. The lake is home to 48 different species of fish, as well as otters. There are 5 bike trails, 2 mountain bike trails, 9 hiking trails and 2 educational trails on the lake's shores for recreation.

A cruise on Skadar Lake is truly a one-of-a-kind experience. In the summer, hidden beaches and swimming in the lake are essential, while rides on traditional wooden boats are also included in the offer.  Sportfishing is a real attraction here, and for birdwatching enthusiasts, the lake offers great views from a boat or from a platform. Winter and autumn are ideal times to go birdwatching because large flocks of migratory birds pass over Skadar Lake. Skadar Lake is only a 30 minutes drive from Podgorica, making it an ideal weekend getaway for nature lovers.
